Film Northants is a community short film festival launched in 2008 which aims to showcase the film-making talent of people living and working in Northamptonshire. The festival was founded by Lily Canter and her husband Mark Dayman in 2008.
The festival is run by a volunteer management community which is made up of film-makers, journalists, logistic managers and others. Lily is chair of the festival and responsible for developing partnerships with businesses, charities and film festivals.
Each year all of the eligible festival entries are hosted on the official website www.filmnorthants.co.uk. From all the entries a panel of judges select a shortlist of films. These finalists are screened at a multi-plex cinema in Northamptonshire during a red carpet awards ceremony. Previous hosts have been Vue in Northampton and the current ceremony host is Cineworld in Sixfield, Northampton.
The festival is launched in the spring each year and the deadline for entries is in the summer, usually August. The screening and red carpet awards ceremony is held in September.
Past prizes have included a flatscreen TV, free film studio hire, £500 vouchers, film merchandise, a day on a film set and annual cinema passes.
The film entries vary in genre but to keep within the rules they all have to be shot in Northamptonshire and under five minutes in length.
Past winners have included horror flick Confined, mystery melodrama No Stone Unturned and crime thriller Love Is…
Winners of the festival have gone on to set up their own production companies, make feature films and become part of the Film Northants management committee.
