Investigation into cost of children’s competitive sport

You really can get feature ideas from everyday conversations as my latest article for Guardian Money proves.

I was chatting to my hairdresser about her 10-year-old daughter who does swimming training five days a week.

I asked her “is it expensive for her to train so much?” and I was surprised by the answer. It turns out that competitive sport for young children can mount up to thousands of pounds a year.

I immediately thought ‘there is a story here’ especially as it was one month before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

So I did some more detailed research, spoke to sports funding experts and spoke to parents. The piece was published on the Saturday of the opening weekend of the Olympics in the Guardian newspaper and online.
